See if this describes your situation.

You need a writer with whom you can communicate on a very personable level. One who is completely reliable. The writer becomes your friend, your confidant. You depend on the writer to help you stay on schedule, produce a quality product and make you look good to your boss. Unless provoked, you won’t change soon.

You need a writer who can take minimal direction and quickly turn it into a 700-800 word story with research, telephone interviews, quotes and attribution – all for an affordable fee. You will use that story in your magazine and website, and possibly even repurpose it for release to the news media and for marketing collateral. The story needs to be in a standard digital format that you can easily receive, edit and import for all your uses.

Where possible, you want photos to accompany the story. In some instances, you will also have a commercial photographer shoot photographs to go with the story. Exclusively or combined, you probably will still use at least some of the candids, and you want rights that cover usage in the magazine, internet, news media and possibly collateral. You prefer that the photos be digital to simplify their transfer and inclusion.

Since your subject matter is somewhat technical, you need someone who is intelligent, articulate and responsible. The writer must be able to take complex subjects and accurately translate them into words that the general public can readily understand. The result must be clean and precise so that proofreading corrections are minimal and editing is primarily for length.

You need someone who is completely reliable and trustworthy. You are depending on the writer to deliver quality copy as ordered and by deadline. You are also depending on the writer to keep everything confidential. Only the desired story should come from the writer, and only to you.
